13 June 1950 Hugo Koblet becomes the first non-Italian Giro-winner

Since the beginning its history in 1909, Giro d’Italia was always won byan Italian cyclist. It was the 33rd edition (between 24 May and 13 June 1950) that witnessed the first foreign success. Although the Swiss Hugo Koblet’s triumph was a bit of a surprise, because Fausto Coppi, Gino Bartali and Fiorenzo Magni were considered the biggest pre-race favourites.

A year later, Koblet surprised everyone (including Coppin and Bartali) agsin eith his eoic dolo ride and his Tour de France overall victory.
