This was Anquetil first ever mountain stage victory at the Tour de France, although he has already won the race three times.
The Tour de France started quite early in 1963, the first stage was held on the 23rd of June.
The 2nd of July was the day of stage 10, a 148,5 km long course between Pau and Bagnères de Bigorre. During the previous editions, Jacques Anquetil didn’t prove himself to be a skilled climber. His victory on this stage was a big success against his rivals, like Raymond Poulidor and Federico Bahamontes.
