The 171 km long stage between Portocivitanova and L'Aquila is sometimes called the 6th, sometimes the 7th stage of Giro d'Italia 1935 in cycling history books, depending on how you count the two half stages on the previous day.

But one thing is certain. The Giro d'Italia stage was held on 24 May 1935 witnessed

the first stage victory of the Italian cycling legend Gino Bartali.

It was a mountain stage including the ascent of Capanelle. The neo-pro Bartali delivered a solo victory. He won the climber competition and finished 7th in the heneral classification that year.

Nevertheless, this was a Giro d'Italia with an almost unusually impressive international peloton. Two-time Giro d'Italia winner André Leducq participated the race, and Maurice Archambaud who was part of the French first team at Tour de France mostly when the winner was a French rider, finished 4th in the general classification of Giro d'Italia 1935.
