Tourmalet at Tour de France (TDF 2023 Stage 6)

Tourmalet in the middle of the first week (6th stage) of Tour de France 2023. The race visits the famous ascent on 6th July 2023. As usual, the cyclists have to climb Tourmalet mid-stage, while the summit finish will be on Cauterets -Cambasque. Marco Pantani, leader of the general classification since the 14th stage finished first on the top of Oropa on the 30th of May in 1999. The ascent leading to the Sanctuary of Oropa (Santuatio di Oropa)   introduced to Giro d’Italia in 1963. Vico Taccone reached the top first. In 1993, Massimo Ghirotto was the fastest cyclist. It was only the third time in 1999, that the ascent was included in the program of Giro d’Italia. But most likely it became the most memorable occasion. 25 May 1951 The longest (81 km) individual time trial at Giro d’Italia was held

The longest individual time trial at Giro d’Italia was a 81 km long stage between Peruggia and Terni on 25th May 1951. The stage was won by Fausto Coppi, who wasn’t entirely in the best shape, after he broke his collabone earlier in that spring. It took Coppi 2 hours 4 minutes and 15 seconds to complete the course. Behind him Louison Bobet finished 2nd and Hugo Koblet, who would make his famous long escape at the Tour de France a few weeks later, 3rd. Giro d’Italia 1951 was won by Fiorenzo Magni ahead of Rik Van Steenbergen and Ferdi Kübler. Coppi finished fourth.
