The first Milano-Sanremo (1907)

Like in the case of many of the great, historical cycling races, creating Milano-Sanremo was closely linked to a newspaper, namely, the La Gazzetta dello Sport. First of all, the finish town, Sanremo was certain. The wealthy members of the local sport club wanted to have a race and contacted Eugenio Costamagna, the owner of the La Gazzetta dello Sport, who already created the successful Giro di Lombardia in 1905. But Costamagna was concerned about the possible success of a bike race around the town, because he already tried to organize a race for cars to Sanremo, and it was a disaster. There is a story about Louis Trousselier (1881-1939), the winner of Tour de France in 1905, that’s makes him one of those very characteristic protagonists of the early days of road cycling races: he lost all his prize money earned during the Tour de France by playing dice with friends on the night of his victory. Trousselier was a big gambler in many senses. He did’t rode the first Tour de France in 1903, because he was banned. Earlier that year, he finished Bordeaux-Paris second, but was disqualified because he had taken shelter behind a car during the race. THE 19TH CENTURY CYCLING CONTENT MOVED TO.  THE CYCLING REVOLUTION BLOG, THE NEWEST MEMBER OF PELOTONTALES BLOG FAMILY.   Marie (1867-1934) and Pierre Curie (1857-1906) were married on 26 July 1895. It was a wedding without religious service and Marie wore a simple blue dress she used to wear later as a laboratory outfit for years. The newlyweds shared a hobby, they liked to make long bicycle trips. No wonder, that they enjoyed this outdoor activity during their honymoon.

Road cycling is not a winter sport. But sometimes -especially in the high mountains  – winter visits road cycling events in the form of snow. Images of cyclists struggling through the snow are usually fit into the narrativa of road cycling races being heroic and epic. The most scandalous Tour de France ever

The first Tour de France without Henri Desgrange in charge since the creation of the event in 1903 didn’t go down well in the history of road cycling at all.   In 1937 Jacques Goddet was full in charge and with him came the first big change: it was the first time when gear change was allowed. Each team had its own car with extra material to help with mechanical problems. On the other hand, this was the last time riders without a team could attend the race.
