As La Vuelta ciclista a España (19 August-11 September 2022), the last three-week race of of the season is nearing, let’s talk about the cyclists who won all the three grand tours at least one time. Jacques Anquetil was the first rider to achieve this, when he finally won the Vuelta in 1963. At that point of his career, he already had a Giro d’Italia and 3 Tour de France victories. The 33rd Tour de France was held between 10th and 30th July 1939. This was the last Tour de France before the 2nd world war. The next edition was held 1947. Because of the tense political situation in Europe, Italy, Spain and Germany didn’t took part in the competition, which means, Gino Bartali couldn’t defend his title. Sylvére Maes won the race. Everyone, who followed Tour de France 2022 day by day, expected it, but after the last stage it’s finally official: the 109th Tour de France was the fastest edition ever. Overall winner Jonas Vingegaard ( Jumbo-Visma) rode 3,350,1 km in 79h 33′ 20″, thus realising an overall speed of 42.457 km/h (26.381 mph).
The last grand tour of the year, La Vuelta ciclista a España will be held between 19th August and 11th September 2022. The race will start in Utrecht and as usual nowadays, there will be three stages in the host country, Netherlands, before the first rest day. On a mountain stage of Tour de France, anything can be epic. There is a moment, especially in the Pyrenees, when the finishline is already shown from a camera behind the finish. And the riders are emerging from the big nothing. On the 17th stage of Tour de France 2022, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), the rider in the yellow jersey and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), the defending champion, who is currently wearing the white jersey, arrived together on the top of Peyragudes, the last climb of the day. Before the 17th stage of Tour de France 1969 Eddy Merckx’s first overall victory was almost secured. He led the general classification with more than 8 minutes. The 214, 5 km long stage between Luchon and Mourenx included the “big four” ascents of the Pyrenees: Peyresourde, Aspin, Tourmalet, Aubisque. Eddy Merckx (Faema) attacked right before the top of Tourmalet, only to collect some mountain points. A few km later he realized, that nobody went with him.
