19 July 1903 Maurice Garin wins the first Tour de France

The first Tour de France started with 60 riders  on the 1st of July in 1903. After six stages (a total of 2428 km) only 21 cyclists arrived in the Parc de Princes velodrome in Paris. Maurice Garin won the first stage already and remained in leading position untill the end of the race.

Tour de France fun facts: the longest breakaway in the history of Tour de France

The longest successful Tour de France breakaway

Albert Bourlon managed the longest sucessful solo breakaway in the history of Tour de France in 1947.  It happened on the 253 km long 14th stage between Carcassone and Luchon on 11th July 1947. Burlon rode alone during the entire stage. It was his only Tour de France stage win. There are other six over 200 km long breakaways in the history of Tour de France.

Tour de France returned to the Col du Granon after 36 years and made history again. In 1986, when the climb was included into the program of Tour de France for the very first time, five-time winner Bernard Hinault lost the yellow jersey. His teammate, Greg LeMond took it over and won the general classification that year. 29 June 1957 Jacques Anquetil’s first Tour de France stage victory

5-time Tour de France winner Jacques Anquetil attented the race for the first time in his career in 1957. Actually,  on 29th June 1957 there were two half stages: 3/a, a 15 km long team time trial and a 134 km long usual road stage. The time trial was won by the French team, which means, technically this was the first stage victory for Jacques Anquetil. But he delivered his first individual victory on the very same day.
