Eddy Merckx on the cobbles (Paris-Roubaix 1970)

The picture was taken on a training ride before Paris-Roubaix in 1970. Eddy Merckx earned his first Paris-Roubaix victory in 1968.  Next year he became second. The 68th edition of the “Hell of the North”  on the 12th April in 1970 witnessed his second triumph. Merckx also won the race in 1973.

Defending champion, Eddy Merckx won the 14th stage of Tour de France  up to the Mont Ventoux on the 10th July 1970. This was Merckx’s 6th stage victory from  the total of 8 stage wins at the Tour de France 1970. He took the yellow jersey on the 6th stage and never let it out of his hands. He won the Tour de France with 12 min and 41 sec ahead of Joop Zoetemelk. During the active cycling years of Eddy Merckx, Tour de France visited Mont Ventoux twice. 18 April 1969 – Guido Reybrouck’s victory at Amstel Gold Race

The 4th edition of Amstel Gold Race stretched 259 km, started in Helmond, finished in Meerssen. Hail and snow made the competition difficult, 132 riders started the race, but only 36 finished it. This was Reybrouck’s only one victory at Amstel Gold Race.  Jon Huysmans finished 2nd, Eddy Merckx 3rd.

10 July 1970 Eddy Merckx’s Victory on the Mont Ventoux

This was the 14th stage of the race, a 170 km long course between Gap and Mont Ventoux. Merckx won the race in yellow, he gained the jersey on the 6th stage and led the general classification since then.
