Surely, most cycling fans know, that Maurice Garin won the first Tour de France in 1903. But have you ever wonder, who else were in the top ten of the first edition? This post might answer your question.
1. Maurice Garin (1871-1957)
One of the stars of the early years of road cycling races.
2 .Lucien Pothier (1883-1957)
Notable French cyclist from the turn of the century. His second place at Tour de France 1903 was his best result. He was among the disqualified riders next year.
There is a rather funny anecdote about him and François Faber: in 1903 they supposed to ride the one-day race Bordeaux-Paris, but on the night prior they enjoyed too much what the vine cellar of the hotel could provide and had to give up the competition.
3. Fernand Augereau (1882-1958)
Little known about French cyclist Augereau, 3rd of the first Tour de France. He won Bordeaux -Paris in the subsequent year.
4 .Rodolfo Muller (1876- 1947)
Italian cyclist Muller started his career in the 19th century, finished 6th at Paris-Roubaix in 1898.
He was the winner of the Concours de Tourisme du TCF in 1902, the first race led up to Col du Tourmalet.
His 4th place at Tour de France was definitely the peak of his career.

The French rider won Paris-Tours in 1901. Frequently participated in Paris-Roubaix, finished mostly in top10.
6. Marcel Kerff (1866-1914)
A Belgian rider coming from a real cyclist family: his brothers, Leopold and Charles were professional cyclists too.
He was most active during the 19th century and ended his career in 1904.
Unfortunately, he was one of the first civil victims of World War I.
