CRUMBS FROM THE PAST
Giro d'Italia 1926 promised a big battle between the two Campionissimos Costante Girardengo and Alfredo Binda. But Binda, the winner of the previous edition crashed during the first stage between Milan and Turin. He wanted to give up the race, but was persuaded by his team Legnano not to do so.
However, Legnano. some might say a bit too early, switched the focus from Binda to Giovanni Brunero, who managed to win the race. He became the first cyclist to win Giro d'Italia three times.
Meanwhile Binda, in the position of kind of a super-domsetique won 6 stages and finished the race 2nd in the general classification.
Girardengo, who was leading the generalclassification for 3 dsys, abandoned the race in the 7th stage.
