Before Giro d’Italia 1940, Gino Bartali was already two-time Giro d’Italia (1936, 1937) and one-time Tour de France (1938) winner. He was the leader of the Legnano team in 1940, but had an ambicious and very talented young teammate, the 20 years old Fausto Coppi, who took the first place in the general classification in the 11th stage.

Cycling Who’s Who: Vittorio Adorni

Vittorio Adorni was born on 14th November 1937 in  San Lazzaro di Parma. His professional career began in 1961. Adorni was rather known as a domestique (he played an important role in Eddy Merckx’s first Giro d’Italia victory in 1968) , but he also managed to win the Giro d’Italia in 1965. He was a master of tactic, no wonder, that from his 10 participations,  he finished Giro d’Italia six times with a top5 result. He also won the World Championship in Imola (Italy) in 1968, and had another stage race overall victories like the Tour de Romandie in 1965 and 1967. Vincenzo Nibali on the Passo Giau

Passo Giau was part of the program of Giro d’italia three times during the 2010’s (2012, 2013 and 2016). Two occasions of them happened to be the same years, when Vincenzo Nibali won the Giro d’Italia (2013, 2016) During the Giro d’Italia in 2013 Passo Giau was part of the legendary 20th stage, the snowy day up to the monster Trwe Cime Lavaredo. Cycling Who’s Who: Learco Guerra

Learco Guerra was born on the 14 of October 1902 in Bagnolo San Vito, Italy. After a short attempt to be a football player, Guerra turned to road cycling and became professional in 1928.  He was among the top riders of the era both in the peloton of the Grand Tours and the one-day classics. He earned the nickname “Locomotiva Umana” [ Human Locomotive]. Guerra attended the Tour de France twice (1930 and 1933), he finished second in both occasions.  He also won a total of 7 Tour de France stages. He earned much more success at the Giro d’Italia. Cycling Who’s Who: Giuseppe Enrici

Giuseppe Enrici was born on the 16 Juni 1894 in Pittsburgh, USA. Although he was born in America, he was an Italian citizen at the time when he won the Giro d’Italia (1924).  He also won two stages that year.  His other results at the Giro: 3rd (1921), 6th (1923) 5th  1926) 13th (1928). He attended several other Italian races mostly with top10  results, but without any other notable victory. Every generation has its “eternal second” rider. During the post WW1 period in Italy, this was Gaetano Belloni. Belloni was born on the 26th of August in 1892 in Pizzighettone, Italy. Before turning professional, he won several races as amateur, including the Italian Championship. There were significantly more races held during the first World War than during the second one, and Belloni participated in many of them.
