18 April 1969 – Guido Reybrouck’s victory at Amstel Gold Race

The 4th edition of Amstel Gold Race stretched 259 km, started in Helmond, finished in Meerssen. Hail and snow made the competition difficult, 132 riders started the race, but only 36 finished it. This was Reybrouck’s only one victory at Amstel Gold Race.  Jon Huysmans finished 2nd, Eddy Merckx 3rd.

18 April 1982 Jan Raas won Paris-Roubaix

The weather on the day of the 80th Paris-Roubaix was dry. The road from Compiegne to Roubaix was 270,5 km long. 174 riders  were at the start,  57 of them were able to the route. With 20 km to go, a 9-man group led the race, including Jan Raas, Ludo Peeters, Bernard Hinault and Roger de Vlaeminck. Peeters, who was working for Raas on this day, escaped from the group, so Hinault and co. had to chase him. When they caught him, Raas attacked, reached the velodrome in Roubaix alone and won the race. This was his only Paris-Roubaix victory.

26 February 1981 – Jan Raas won Omloop Het Volk

Jan Raas won Omloop Het Volk (predecessor of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad) He was the best from a four-man breakaway group on a cold and wet race. Rass was only the third non-Belgian rider, who won the Omloop since 1945. Damaged by its own popularity (Tour de France 1904)

The first edition of the Tour de France in 1903 was a big success. Not only for the L’Auto, which was able to increase its sell numbers but for all the cycling fans in France. But the growing popularity of the event caused some unexpected issues right at the second edition of the race in 1904. The prestige of winning the race was too hight, riders and spectators went totally mad. Some riders were attacked and beaten by the fanatical supporters of other participants. Nails were thrown on the road and even the riders cheated very intensively. Mini Cycling Who’s Who: Jan Nolten

Jan Nolten was born on the 20th January 1930 in Sittard-Geelen, Netherland Nolten started his professional cyclist career in 1952. He rode Tour de France five times between 1952 and 1956. Although he never managed to finish the race among the top 10, he was an excellent grand tour rider. He as part of the actions alongside at many memorable stages. He also participated in Giro d!Italia (1954, 1956, 1957) and Vuelta a Espana (1955) Jan Nolten passed away on the 13rd July in 2014.
