Tour de France 2022
Stage 10
12 July 2022
Morzien-Megève
148,1 km
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE STAGE
As it was rather expected, a large bunch of riders formed the breakaway group of the day after a relatively long building-up period. Ot became cleare quite quickly, that the stage victory will come from that group and the peloton will take care only not to leave them on a too long leash.
One of the most intriguing elements of the early part of the stage was Tadej Pogacar behaviour towards his UEA Team Emirates teammates, after Georges Bemnett was forced to leave the race due COVID-19. The double winner of the race just tried to kepp distance from his own teammates.
Just before the race was stopped by an action of protesters, Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) launched an attack. He was able to maintain his solo ride for a long while after the race restarted.
At the end of the stage another EF Education-EasyPost rider, Magnus Cort managed to cross the finish line first.
There was a little excitement in case if the yellow jersey. At a certain point of the race, it seemed so, that the USE Team Emirates deliberstely wanted to loose Pogacar’s leading position for tactical reasons. Indeed, Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) was in virtual yellow during the stage, but at the end Pogacar finished the stage just to keep the famous kit.

LIVE TEXTING DURING THE RACE
(please, refresh the page manually)
13.30 I must admit, I like it, when the race returns after the rest day rather with a mountain stage than with one with a possible bunch sprint. I’m quite a whimsical person, it’s hard for me to focus on the race again, when we expect a rather boring stage.
But this year is OK.
13.50 Georges bennett (UAE Team Emirates) and Luke Durbridge (BikeExchange-Jayco) is forced out of the race due COVID-19. Not a good omen. Unfortunatelly, there us an increasing possibility, that this nasty little virus will cause even more troubles during the race.
14.16
123 km to go from the total of 148,1 km of the stage. The breakaway of the day hasn’t formed yet. But good to see Thibaut Pinot and Chris Froome among the riders trying to escape.
14.27
Neverteless, with its two 4th, a 3rd and at the end a 2nd category climb, this stage is just a sneak peek, what’s next on the nex two days in the Alps.
Still no breakaway group established, which makes the race quite fast.
Now Alexis Gougeard (B&B) is on a solo ride a bit ahead of the peloton
15.00
90 km to go and it’s getting rather chaotic and anxious. There was an attack by Tom Pidcock earlier, which forced Tadej Pogacar to react. There seems to be a little uncertainity in the UAE Team
Dylan van Baarle, LL Sanchez, Philippe Gilbert and Pierre Rolland are riding at the front of the race now, it seems to be a breakaway group everybody is satified.
Or not?
Breakaway group of the day is still forming.
15.15.
Around two dozens rides in the breakaway group which seems to be maintained, finally.
80 km to go, gap between the break and peloton over 2 minutes already.
15.20
Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) is the best placed in the general classification among the breakaway riders
Other riders in the breakaway: Dylan van Baarle, Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers),Alberto Bettiol, Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost)Mads Pedersen, Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo), Luis Leon Sanchez, Fred Wright (Bahrain Victorious), Jack Bauer, Nick Schultz (BikeExchange-Jayco), Ion Izagirre, Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis)Connor Swift, Hugo Hofstetter (Arkea-Samsic), Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), Philippe Gilbert (Lotto Soudal), Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech), Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Total Energies) ,Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM), Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-KTM)Kristian Sbaragli (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Simone Velasco (Astana Qazaqstan), Georg Zimmerman (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert)
15.40
I don’t know, it’s only just because of the fact, that in the recent few years it became evident, that we’re able to follow a stage from the very beginning, but the struggle, the fight for being part of a brekaway is getting more and more intriguing.
Anyway, less than 60 km to go, the gap between the leading big (25 riders) group and the peloton is more than 5 minutes.
16.06
Bettiol was just half a minute ahead of the rest of the breakaway group.
But he has to wait now, because there is a demonstration on the road and the big breakaway group has been caught.
A big guestion: will be the road cleared before the peloton arrives to that point?
16.17
The race stopped. Bettiol is circling around the car of the jury to keep it warm.
16.19
Now Bettiol is allowed to continue the race.
Let’s see, how this unnecessary break will influence the dynamics of the race.
16.40
Peloton is more than 9 minutes behind Bettiol, who continues his solo ride even after the break caused by the protesters.
At the same time, this gap means, Lennard Kämna is in virtual yellow jersey now. It’s quite possible, that UAE Team Emirates is going to loose Pogacar’s leading position in the general classification deliberately.
17.00
Last 10 km
Bettiol was caught by 4-5 riders (incl. van Baarle, Magnus Cort etc), but now he is at the front again, joined by Zimmermann?
So, the Bettiol-Zimmermann duo at the front.
Meanwhile, peloton 9 and half minutes behind
17.05
Bettiol dropped from the head of the race
now a dozen riders on the front, among them Lennard Kämna (still in virtual yellow)
17.07
6 km to go, Luis Leon Sanchez attacks
17.15
1500 m to the finish
Jorgenson and Schultz joined Sanchez.
Also Dylan van Baarle is here too
Other riders arrived.
Sanchez, Schultz and M.Cort are sprinting.
Schultz or Cort? More likely Cort.
Magnus Cort wins the stage.
Tadej Pogacar remains is yellow.
On this day in Tour de France history
1964 the duel between Jacques Anquetil and Raymond Poulidor on Puy de Dôme
1971 Luis Ocaña’s crash on the descent of Col de Mente
A bit cultural history for today
As #tdf2022 continues in the French Alps after the rest day, let’s talk a bit about Henriette d’Angeville, who declared herself to be the first woman to climb #montblanc in 1838. But in fact, she wasn’t the first one. 🧵👇1/7 pic.twitter.com/jdpC3dxJW4
