The question is not entirely theoretical. Just remember, the Pyrenees was introduced to the race in 1910, the Alps one year later.

But since then, the famous ascent, like Tourmalet, Aspin, Aubisque, Izoard, Galibier, Mont Ventoux , Alpe d’Huez, Puy de Dôme etc, are the places of epic battles, iconic cycling moments.
