August is the month of the Spanish grand tour (La Vuelta ciclista a Espana 19 August -11 September 2022).
But did you know, that for decades, La Vuelta was held in April? The first autumn Vuelta was held only in 1995. (For more La Vuelta fun facts click here>>)
While you can find an overview of La Vuelta stages here>>, I have to admit, that from the point of view of a researcher and storyteller, unfortunatelly, La Vuelta provides far less exciting information, than the other two grand tours. During May and July it’s usually much more easier to focus only on the history of the actual race to be able to post interesting stories daily. But during the last 3-week race of the season it works a bit differently.
Hence there is more new content related to other races, than to La Vuelta currently. Like the famous picture of Georges Speicher at the Paris-Roubaix in 1935 in the Vintage cycling picture of the day category of the blog.
Also, there is an update in the Faces of the peloton series, the cyclist who signed the start list of the first Tour de France under the pseudonym ‘Samson’.
If you’d like to test your knowledge, you can play the quickfire quiz Coppi or Bartali? or the other quiz about the lesser known Tour de France winners. If you read PelotonTales blog frequently, I’m pretty sure, you ‘ll have no problem to pick the correct answers.
Visit PelotonTales blog frenquently to read about more great stories and incredible fun facts. Learn the story behind the most iconic images or test your knowledge.
As La Vuelta a España is slowly approaching, there will be more content related to the hidtory of the Spanish 3-week race.
